More than a hundred thousand people hurled into eternity in an instant -destruction and death. At half - past five o'clock on Monday morning, December 28th, 1908 the southern part of Italy, was devistated by a terrific earthquake, lasting 23 seconds, which completely annihilated everything within its zone. Thousands of men, and women and children not having any time to dress ran naked - shrieking into the streets only to be crushed by falling walls. Following immediately after the great shocks came an enormous tidal wave. Almost imediately afterward fires broke out in many places consuming people caught under the rubble. Mount Etna one of the worlds largest volcanoes in the world, became active.
